Le Bonheur
CVICU Expansion

Blake Tyler

Project Executive

Turner Construction Company

Turner Construction is currently completing a $65 million expansion of Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, totaling 128,000 square feet. This includes 31 new Cardiovascular ICU rooms, 14 new Neonatal ICU rooms, and a new Cath Lab/MRI Suite, which is the 7th of its kind in the nation. This month's presentation will focus on the challenges of expanding an existing healthcare facility, the design features of the expansion, and the impact that the facility will have on our community.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the challenges of safely expanding an existing healthcare facility, taking into account the specific case of Le Bonheur Children's Hospital expansion.
  2. Learn about the health design features incorporated into the expansion of Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, including the new Cardiovascular ICU rooms, Neonatal ICU rooms, and Cath Lab/MRI Suite.
  3. Analyze the impact that such healthcare facility expansions have on the wellfare of local communities, using Le Bonheur Children's Hospital as a case study.
  4. Gain insight into the career and contributions of Blake Tyler, including his role in lean construction and his influence in the Memphis healthcare construction landscape.

Blake Tyler, a Project Executive at Turner Construction Company, has made substantial contributions to Memphis and the Mid-South region by advancing healthcare through construction. With a portfolio that surpasses $550 million in managed healthcare projects, his experience spans hospital expansions, critical care units, and community health centers. Blake recognizes that each client's concerns are multifaceted, extending beyond the standard metrics of safety, cost, schedule, and quality. As a leader in lean construction, focused on reducing waste and delivering cost savings to clients, Blake played a key role in founding a Memphis-area Community of Practice through the Lean Construction Institute. Additionally, he serves as a board member for the American Institute of Architects in Memphis and is an active participant in the Association of Builders and Contractors (ABC) and the Association of General Contractors (AGC). Regarded as an innovator, mentor, and leader by colleagues and clients alike, Blake considers the work environments he has created and the professionals he has seen grow into leadership roles throughout the construction industry among his most significant accomplishments.
