Building Area (sf): 183,000
Completion: February 2022
The new concourse space includes 29 successive and alternating folded ceiling modules which we call the “staggered martinis”. Underneath the triangular ceiling planes, enclosing the perimeter, is a transparent view of the airfield. Travelers’ experience is prioritized with an inside-out design approach. High ceilings and wide, unobstructed floor-plates allow the passengers, airlines, and staff room to utilize increased amenities and comfortable circulation. Restaurants, retail spaces, and performance and play areas spill out onto the edge of the main circulation pathway as places of interest similar to exploring the streets of Memphis.

4 - The goal of the client was to renovate the existing concourse-B portion of the airport into something that would constitute a new civic pride and create airport amenities and hospitality that was never a priority before.

7 - The existing concourses were narrow and low-ceiling spaces with sporadic and inadequate daylighting and views to the air traffic. Photos by UrbanARCH.
8 - One important component of the Owner’s program was to seismically retrofit and brace the existing concourse section while renovating the space into a much larger and more welcoming space. Photos by UrbanARCH.
9 - The solution was to remove the old 2nd floor roof and columns, expand the footprint out along each side and raise the new structure higher over the existing apron level building. The new structural system provides buttressing for the existing structure that remains beneath. Photos by Flintco.
