The Harrover/Mann mid-century modern terminal has welcomed passengers at the Memphis International Airport for nearly 60 years. Today the new Concourse B is reinventing passengers’ experience as they await boarding and deplaning their aircraft. The final product harkens back to the original 1961 “martini columns” of the original terminal design with our 21st century modern interpretation. The new concourse space includes 29 successive and alternating folded ceiling modules which we call the “staggered martini”. Underneath the triangular ceiling planes, enclosing the perimeter, is a transparent view to the airfield. Travelers’ experience is prioritized with an inside-out design approach. High ceilings and wide unobstructed floorplates allow passengers, airlines, and staff room to utilize increased amenities and comfortable circulation where meandering terrazzo floor patterns allude to a pathway. Restaurants, retail spaces, performance and play areas spill out onto the edge of the main circulation similar to exploring the streets of Memphis. World class restrooms are always appreciated and required for weary travelers, and the new Concourse B restrooms do not disappoint. Stainless steel and opaque glass toilet partitions offer a polished, clean aesthetic and the restrooms are equipped with all the latest in touchless technologies. Multiple seating options and lounges provide places to retreat from the bustling circulation zones. The highly finished interior environment is warm, light-filled, and comfortable. An expansive art program is integrated into the architecture to captivate building users. Welcome to the new MEM!
