AIA Film Challenge: A Blueprint for Better
Heather B. Koury, Hon. AIA
Executive Director, AIA Memphis
Judge, 2018 AIA Film Challenge
The AIA Film Challenge, previously known as the I Look Up Film Challenge, started in 2015 as a 16-day national competition for filmmakers and architects to partner to create short films that showed the impact of an architect’s work and how it can inspire the rising generation. The first AIA Film Challenge garnered a total of 202 registrants who produced a total of 26 films. Winning films received a cash prize and were shared across various AIA channels.
In 2016, the 2nd Annual AIA Film Challenge was a month-long competition for architects and filmmakers to partner to create films that brought to life the story of architecture that solves a problem, challenge, or issue. Films illustrated how architecture improves the quality of lives and how architects are helping design solutions. A total of 293 people registered for the competition, resulting in 47 films. Winning films received a cash prize and were screened at SXSW Eco and the Architecture and Design Film Festival in NYC.
By 2017, the 3rd Annual Film Challenge was record-breaking. Under the theme Blueprint for Better, participants submitted more than 80 films to the challenge. The public voting process generated over 280,000 votes for the films, and the People’s Choice Award Winner alone garnered over 122,000 votes. Winning films received a cash prize and were screened at the Architecture and Design Film Festival in Chicago and NYC.
This year, the AIA will has launched its 4th Annual AIA Film Challenge, which calls for stories of architects and civic leaders collaborating to create a Blueprint for Better. You can learn more by visiting AIAFilmChallenge.org.
