The Universal Life Building Renovation
Presented by Jimmie E. Tucker, AIA | Self+Tucker Architects
Located on the corner of Danny Thomas Boulevard and Dr. M L King Avenue, the Universal Life Building formerly housed one of the largest African-American insurance companies in the country. In 1949, McKissack & McKissack, Tennessee’s first African-American architectural firm designed and constructed the building. In late September, Self + Tucker Architects held a groundbreaking ceremony for the rehabilitation project. After restoration, Self + Tucker will lease 20% of the building, 30% will be leased by private sector tenants, and 50 percent of the building will be occupied by the City of Memphis.
