AIA Memphis celebrated its 65th Anniversary with the annual Celebration of Architecture Honors+Awards Gala at the new Ballet Memphis in Overton Square. The sell-out crowd (the biggest ever!) mingled over a fabulous cocktail reception featuring vignettes performed by Ballet Memphis dancers and a silent auction of original work by architecture students from the Department of Architecture at the University of Memphis.
As the ballet performances wound down, the crowd gathered to celebrate sixty-five years of AIA Memphis and the future of the practice by honoring individuals and firms for their outstanding contributions to the community through service, advocacy, education and design. AIA Memphis past president John Harrison Jones, AIA, was awarded the President's Award for his service to the Chapter. Newly elevated AIA Fellow Josh Flowers, FAIA, HBG Design, recognized outstanding student leaders from the University of Memphis Department of Architecture. Also recognized were AIA Memphis members for recent licensure including: Ryan Morris, AIA, UrbanArch, Jeffrey Parnell, AIA, HBG Design, and Nicholas Pirani, AIA, Evans, Taylor, Foster, Childress.
Francis Gassner Award recipient Jimmie E. Tucker, AIA, Self + Tucker Architects was paid tribute before Timothy Hawk, FAIA, of WSA Studio in Columbus, Ohio kicked off the AIA Memphis Design Awards. Hawk, as jury chair, handed out the eleven design awards with splendid candor and congratulated the Memphis design community on the quality of works submitted. The celebration continued with an After Party at Mama Gaia. Congratulations to this year's winners—this event will be hard to top!
